Other creative ways to promote your website
Let me restate that it is very important to do what you can to improve your search engine listings. But there are many other ways of drawing traffic to your site that are sometimes overlooked. Let’s take a look at those options.
1. Advertising
If you are willing to spend a little money, advertising on other sites or through search engines is the most obvious method of promotion. One place to consider would be Yahoo!, which puts your ads on Yahoo!, AltaVista and CNN. You can also advertise through Ask, which puts your ads on Ask, Excite, Match.com, Gifts.com, and others. Finally, there is Google, of course. Most of these let you set your own budget so that you only pay for as many ads as you can afford. They also will place your ads on relevant searches, so that if you are advertising a shoe store, they would display your ad when people search for shoes, sneakers, cleats, and so on.
2. Newsletters
Another effective method is to have a free newsletter where visitors can sign up on your website. This section will provide a brief overview of why newsletters can be beneficial for your web site. I will also be creating a tutorial soon on how to start your own newsletter or ezine.
·Newsletter announcement lists
If your newsletter has useful content, you can actually promote it on the numerous newsletter announcement lists on the Internet. If you do it well, you can actually bring new people who want to visit your site after reading your announcements.
There are a whole lot of announcement lists, so you will want to search around to find which one you feel is the best for your site. Here also is a list of few announcement lists you could consider. But there are many more out there you should check out, as well.
·Newsletter and ezine directories
There are also several ezine directories where you can list your newsletter or ezine. These can send some traffic to your site, as well.
3. Republish your articles
Another way to promote your site is to allow other sites republish your articles. It makes sense for them if they like your article and feel that it might bring traffic to their site. It’s good for you because you get free publicity and they will have a link back to your site.
You can let anyone republish your articles by just having a note on your site saying that all articles are free for republication and they do not need to ask for permission. If you don’t want give immediate permission to everyone, you could have a note saying that they can republish as long as they get permission from you first. It obviously might limit the number of republications, but at least you have control of the situation.
There are also certain sites where you can post your articles to be featured within the site. Especially if your site is not highly ranked, this is a way for people to read your article who might not have found it through your site. Yes, they will be bringing traffic to another site, but hopefully it will entice people to take a look at your site. EzineArticles is one site you could consider.
4. Free Ebooks

Although it will not directly make you money, it is a great way to promote your site. There are free ebook sites out there which will promote and distribute your ebook for free and encourage your visitors to refer your site to their friends. 5. Links from other web sites
In many cases, the name of the game is linking to other sites. Your biggest source of visitors might be links from other site. Even if that won’t be the case, getting links from other sites is an extremely important way to improve your site.
So, how do you do it?
- Have a section of your site where you list link of other sites.
- You can add a “Link to Us” page and provide some HTML code which other sites can use to link to you.
- If you want to have your link on a certain site, ask them if they would be willing and that in return you will add their link to your site.
Maybe even more important than the items listed above is to write useful and quality content. If you begin to write good articles, you might be surprised at how many other sites find them.
Final thoughts
The best advice I have for you is to try to utilize as many ways to promote your site. Some methods will be more effective than others, but you won’t know until you try. Play around with a bunch of these ideas and see what sticks. Who know, eventually it might pay off in a big way.
