How much web space do I need?
That depends on the type of web site you plan to create.
If you have a fairly typical website, you probably will never need to worry about not having enough space. The size of the most basic web page is generally under 20kb. If you add and other fairly common items like an external JavaScript file, external Cascading Style Sheets file that are about 2kb each, your total would rise to 25kb. If you use up to 50kb or less for embedded images (which is way more than most sites use), your total for each page would be 75kb. Therefore, if you have 100 pages in your website you would use 7.5MB (7,500kb).
If you use that 75kb number as a rough gauge of how big each page is, you can at least have some idea of how much space you might need. As another example, my other site, philsbaseball.com, has 590 files and uses 25.1 MB of space (about 42kb per page).
Most web hosts offer you 100MB, 200MB, or more, so you can see that you probably won’t come close to using anything close to that amount with a normal site.
On the other hand, it is a completely different story if you plan to have downloadable music and video files that take up much more space. I don’t have a good estimate for those sites at the moment, but they will take up more space. I will check on this myself, but you could always ask someone with a similar site how much space they need.
By the way, if you already have a site and wonder how much space you are using, you can easily find it by right clicking on your root folder (the first folder that contains your website files) and clicking Properties.
My point is simple. Most web hosts offer way more space than you ever need, so don’t be fooled by a web host that offers a lot of space.
