Free web editors and site builders

Another big decision you need to make when starting your own website is what type of web editor you will use.  If you are willing to spend any money on an editor, I strongly suggest that you use Dreamweaver, because it is currently the best and most popular web editor.  You can find a tutorial with step-by-step instruction on how to use Dreamweaver in the Starting your site with Dreamweaver tutorial.

If you decide you do not want to spend any money, there are a lot of options to choose from, and this article will provide a list of a few free web editors with some comments on each.

There are three basic types of web editors: WYSIWYG editors, HTML editors, and Site Builders.  Most people use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors because they allow you to design your website using an interface very similar to a word processor where you can see almost exactly what your website will look like as you design.  HTML editors are basically text editors that make it easier for you to code pages for the web.  You can also use Site Builders that allow you to design your site from pre-packaged templates.  They are easier to use, but give you less flexibility in your design. In this article we will just focus on the WYSIWYG editors and Site Builders.
